專業職位（和成就亮點）:

香港科技大學校長 (2009年9月-現在)。 陳繁昌教授於2009年9月1日出任香港科技大學第三任校長。在陳校長的領導下，科大的全球知名度顯著上升，成就深受認同並得到國際媒體的廣泛報導。同時，科大與世界多間知名學術機構建立戰略合作夥伴關係 [洛桑联邦理工学院(EPFL), 加州理工學院(Caltech), 麻省理工學院(MIT), 哈佛大學(Harvard), 牛津大學(Oxford), 南加州大學 (USC)等等]，校長並獲邀出席多項大型國際活動，如每年在達沃斯舉辦的世界經濟論壇。科大的全球排名在陳校長的領導下亦不斷進步 – 科大目前位列世界排名第30位及亞洲排名第4位(QS)、全球年輕大學第2位（QS＆THE）和全球大學就業能力排名第13位。在陳校長任內，大學本科課程從三年制順利過渡到四年制。於大學教育資助委員會「2014年研究評審工作」報告中，科大有70% 的研究項目達「世界領先」水平或「國際卓越」水平，是香港八所教資會資助院校之冠。陳校長還倡導在教學上使用新的技術，使科大成為亞洲第一所在全球兩大網上學習平台Coursera和edX提供「大規模開放在線課程MOOCs」的大學。科大本科生可以到海外交流至少一個學期的數量比例已從30％上升到50％以上，而科大是本港所有大學中國際本科生比例最高的一間（佔約10％）。我們在中國大陸，主要是在珠江三角洲建立了重要的實體基礎設施。陳校長策劃並籌募經費，令幾個重大基礎設施項目相繼建成或落實籌建，為實現大學學術及研究使命提供重要設施 – 項目包括三座主要學術樓、一座會議大樓、500宿位的研究生宿舍、水上活動中心、創新科技大樓和設有1000個座位的多用途禮堂。「科大冠名教授席計劃」的教席亦從2009年設立時的8席增加至現時的36席。陳校長領導科大製定了兩個5年策略發展計劃，以及大學的第一套核心價值觀。他亦領導大學高等研究院的進一步發展，包括招聘2任院長和幾位著名的研究院教授，並促成Gordon Research Conference和環太平洋大學協會 (APRU) 的國際秘書處選址科大高等研究院。陳校長積極倡導香港創新科技的發展並從2014年起，在一家周刊撰寫高等教育和創新科技專欄。
美國國家科學基金助埋署長，掌管數學及自然科學部 (2006年10月-2009年8月)。在加入香港科技大學之前，陳校長於2006年至2009年期間，為美國國家科學基金(NSF)委員會助理會長，直屬基金會委員長，掌管數學及自然科學部(MPS)。負責政策，預算提案和分配，與白宮、國會和科學界協調互動。 MPS是NSF屬下最大的理事會，年度預算超過10億美元。其下設5個部門：天文學、化學、材料科學、數學科學和物理學。陳校長確保MPS為持良好的財務狀態，並與其他NSF部門共同推行聯合籌資計劃，啟動部門內的幾項重要措施 (包括資助Advance LIGO，與歐洲VIRGO簽署了一項協議，最終促成人類首次直接探測到重力波); 與歐盟和日本聯合在智利興建無線電望遠鏡ALMA; 啟動數學界首次 “2025年數學科學審查”。陳校長在任期間亦經常代表NSF出席美國和國際科學合作活動。
加州大學洛杉磯分校自然科學學院院長 (2001年7月-2006年9月)。自然科學學院屬下設6個部門：大氣科學、化學、地球與空間科學、數學、物理學和統計學; 及地球物理與行星物理學研究所，合共管理200多名教師，700名研究生，700名本科生和7千萬美元的聯邦政府研究基金。陳校長亦招聘和留任了多位教授（包括菲爾茲獎得主陶哲軒），製定該部門的策略發展規劃，並已成功實施。
加州大學洛杉磯分校國家純數及應用數學研究所Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) 主任 (2000年8月-2001年8月)。陳校長領導IPAM期間推出了多項嶄新項目，邀請多位領袖科學家參與其中，並在加州大學洛杉磯分校和全國推廣該研究所。陳校長還成功提倡了“學生工業研究計劃”，這計劃後來被引進到歐洲和亞洲。離任前，陳校長更取得加州大學洛杉磯分校管理層的承諾，繼續支持和發展IPAM。
加州大學洛杉磯分校數學系主任 (1997年7月-2000年7月)。陳校長於1986年加入加州大學洛杉磯分校為數學系教授，1997年晉升為數學系主任。他是該系5個項目主任之一，並領導學系成功爭取國家自然科學基金資助成立國家純數及應用數學研究所（IPAM），研究所至今仍蓬勃發展。陳校長還領導學系成功在加州大學洛杉磯分校舉辦了美國數學學會(AMS) 千禧年大會。他亦幫助招聘了許多著名教授，包括陶哲軒(Terry Tao)。該學系在美國的排名於2017年已上升至第七位（美國新聞）。
